Image Use

Art history depends on images. Unfortunately, access to many images of artworks is still restricted by copyright, licensing and reproduction fees. While these protections have an important role to play, they can also make it difficult for independent researchers, students and educators to share and discuss works of art.

This website is a non-commercial educational project, created to promote engagement with art history and make the subject more accessible.

Wherever possible, I use:

  • my own photographs of artworks, buildings and sites;
  • images that are in the public domain;
  • images released under Creative Commons or other open licences; or
  • images that I believe may be reproduced for educational purposes.

I make every effort to identify the copyright status of every image and to credit photographers, museums, galleries or other sources where appropriate. If I’ve made a mistake, I’d like to know.

If you are the copyright holder of an image used on this website and believe it should not appear here, please get in touch using the contact page. I’ll investigate promptly and, where appropriate, remove the image or amend the attribution. This website is not intended to generate income or reproduce images for commercial purposes. Its aim is simply to support learning, discussion and a wider appreciation of art history.
